Night Custodian


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Reasonable knowledge of modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.

2. Skill in the use of cleaning materials and equipment, including stripper/buffing machine, wet/dry vacuum cleaner, etc.

3. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor involving the movement of cleaning equipment and furnishings.

4. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions without constant supervision or contact with a supervisor.

5. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other custodial staff, supervisors, teachers, principals, students and the general public utilizing school facilities.

Sufficient minimum experience in janitorial work to demonstrate the ability to function self-sufficiently following a brief orientation period. Sufficient education to demonstrate an ability to read and write as required in the position. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which insures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.

SUPERVISES:

Supervision of other employees is not a normal responsibility of positions in this classification. May occasionally supervise substitute custodians, student helpers or temporary employees for the purpose of assigning tasks and explaining procedures.

JOB GOAL:

To maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

1. Works from a prepared work schedule; sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors; vacuums carpets.

2. Cleans and dusts chalkboards, walls, furniture, woodwork and other equipment.

3. Washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms, cleans windows, door glass and drinking fountains.

4. Empties and cleans waste baskets and picks up paper and other refuse in hallways, entrances and general grounds as necessary.

5. Rearranges chairs, tables, desks, furniture and other equipment to facilitate cleaning activities and for special room arrangement requirements.

6. Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent lamps and occasionally makes other minor plumbing and electrical repairs such as replacing washers or repairing broken electrical outlets.

7. Elementary night custodian will insure that the building is properly secured.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten- or twelve-month year. Salary and work year to be established by the labor agreement and ratified by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation.
