Introducing Our New Literacy Specialist Administrator
We are delighted to announce an exciting development in our journey in supporting students! As part of our commitment to enhancing literacy as a key component of our academic programs, we’re introducing Candice Henkin, formerly the Oregon City Community Education Supervisor, as our new Literacy Specialist. This position is mostly funded through our new Early Literacy Grant enabling us to support teacher training, programing, tutoring and interventions, and summer learning for our youngest learners.
A familiar face in our district, Candice brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge having previously served as a principal and reading specialist within the Oregon City School District in the years before her role at OCCE. Her extensive experience and deep understanding of the educational needs of our students, makes her an ideal fit for this role.
In her capacity as Literacy Specialist, Candice will engage in several impactful initiatives. She will delve into our core curriculum (Wonders / Maravillas), assisting our educators in maximizing core instructional resources to increase student learning. By analyzing current and past data, she will work with staff with teaching strategies and assessment practices to promote student growth. Additionally, Candice will be visiting our schools to identify relative strengths and areas for improvement in our classrooms.
One of the most exciting projects that Candice will be working on will be the implementation of Amira, our innovative literacy support tool. Amira, designed to cater to each student’s unique learning journey, represents a significant step forward in personalized education. Candice will be learning this system inside and out to train our staff and facilitate its successful integration into our current curriculum. She will also be supporting extension opportunities including summer programming.
Bio
Candice Henkin has been in K12 public education for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles. Her work experience includes being a learning specialist, reading specialist, elementary principal, and most recently the Administrator of Community Education. In these roles she has had the opportunity to coach and lead programming that supports our youngest learners in becoming readers. She is a champion for children and families and has demonstrated this passion in both her professional and personal life. She has served as a board member for East Metro Mediation, council member and chair for the Clackamas Early Learning Hub, council member and chair for Clackamas County Leaders for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, along with being a member of the Optimists. Her experience with early literacy and leadership in education has prepared her for this new role as Literacy Specialist for OCSD.
