High School Resources

High school spans key stages of development; the difference between 14 and 18 is big! Increased independence and responsibility are markers of the time. Here is a TedTalk from a neuroscientist about the way risk taking plays into this stage of life. How can we create environments that allow for healthy risk taking? Do we reinforce positive behaviors with positive feedback (which we know the adolescent brain is particularly sensitive to)?

  • Communication also becomes key during this growing time of independence. Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg outlines a helpful methodology to keep lines of connection open with your youth.

  • Career and post-secondary life is key! Your student may be college-bound, starting an apprenticeship, or going to a technical school. Supporting your student in articulating that vision is key to maintaining motivation during their highschool career. TSEL becomes critical.
