What: The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will be made up of 16-20 students representing all three 9-12+ programs in the Oregon City School District. This team will serve as an advisory group to the Superintendent and at times also share perspectives with the School Board.
As students, you will provide insight, thoughts and share questions regarding important issues within the district and specifically at the high school level. Students will also be strongly encouraged to attend a School Board meeting and present the summary information of the conversation to the Board. (Coaching, practice and support will be provided!)
Why: Your voice is essential to our district’s successes. As a system and a community our work should always focus on improving student outcomes and student experiences. To know if we are meeting that goal, or what changes may or may not support our goal, we need to hear from you, our students.
When: Monthly, students will meet with the Superintendent for 45 minutes to an hour to review the Monthly Board Agenda. This time is to be determined by the group but should be during the regular school day. They will learn about the content, discuss topics and their thoughts, and questions and perspectives will be captured. Each month one student from the meeting will attend the Board meeting and be given 5-10 minutes to present the student input summary for the Board and community.
Who: The students should represent all three 9-12 programs. There should be no more than 5 students at any given grade level. It should be a diverse group representing diverse identities, affiliations and experiences. Students should apply through this short google form.
Representing the district through diverse perspectives is a must! (Students for whom school works, and those for whom it does not, as well as students pleased with the opportunities offered as well as those who have requests or new ideas should all apply.) If potential participants do not represent the diversity of the students, specific students may be asked to join the Advisory Council by the Superintendent.
What will you get out of this experience: An opportunity to positively impact our district, snacks (or even lunch), great conversation, a chance to be heard and listened to, an activity to put on your resume, opportunity for public speaking (if you choose to volunteer for that part), meet new students and adults, and learn a bit about how a school district and government works!
