Associate Principal (Elementary)

Position Summary:

In cooperation with the principal, organizes and fosters a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff, and parents. This includes maintaining a learning environment through behavior management, scheduling of classes and activities, and effective guidance and leadership of staff and students.

Essential Functions:

Curriculum/Instruction

1. Assist in the role of instructional leader to promote student behavior that is supportive and conducive to the implementation of the school’s instructional programs and goals.

2. Encourage and assist with innovations in instruction.

3. Oversee student conduct during school transportation.

4. Assist in the promotion of positive school climate through oversight of the positive behavior supports and interventions program. Develop innovative strategies, preventative approaches, and proactive plans for students who demonstrate at-risk behaviors.

5. Assist in the supervision of various special programs, which may include ESOL and/or Special Education.

6. Assist in the development of student scheduling and master schedule.

Personnel

1. Assist with supervision and evaluation of classified and licensed staff, substitute and student teachers.

2. Act as a community liaison between school and community youth programs, Juvenile Department, wrap services, mental health, etc.

3. Responsible for implementing discipline procedures as stated in the student handbookand district code of conduct. Act as a facilitator for the staff with student discipline.

4. Supervise attendance procedures and reporting with parents and community agencies. Work with students to improve attendance.

Management

1. Assist the principal in the discharge of their duties at all times and act in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school.

2. Assist the principal in developing, implementing, and evaluating school procedures, systems, and plans.

3. Participate in the planning and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, accounting, and budgets.

4. Under the guidance of the principal, maintain major responsibility with regard to school emergencies and safety by implementing safety drills, procedures, and planning.

5. Supervisory responsibility for the organization and scheduling of school functions such as athletics, assemblies, and student council and activities.

6. Exercise leadership and supervision of other functions and activities as assigned by the principal.

General

1. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

2. Work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.

3. Follow all District policies, work procedures, and reasonable requests by proper authority.

4. Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, and District patrons.

5. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.

6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to exercise some independent judgment while adhering to prescribed policies and procedures and perform the essential functions of the position with minimal supervision.

2. Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships and work in partnership with supervisors, other staff, students, and the general public.

3. Ability to demonstrate professionalism in dress, speech and manner appropriate to the assignment and work setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Successful completion of criminal history records check, as required by law.

2. Master’s degree or higher in education.

3. Valid Oregon administrative certificate.

4. Minimum of five years successful teaching or administrative experience in public education.

5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bilingual Spanish.

2. Experience supporting student behaviors and understanding of best practices for Social Emotional Learning.

3. Understanding of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

4. Strong lens on educational equity and serving the needs of diverse students.
