Head High School Custodian


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Considerable knowledge of modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.

2. Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and efficient fashion.

3. Knowledge of the procedures and techniques for making routine electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs.

4. Skill in the use of cleaning materials, equipment and tools required for routine maintenance work (See chart of standard equipment and tools used for this job.)

5. Ability to coordinate activities, assign work and supervise subordinate employees and instruct custodians in proper custodial procedures.

6. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor involving the movement of cleaning equipment and furnishings. (See chart of essential job tasks and environmental requirements.)

7. Ability to understand oral and written instructions and apply them to the efficient and timely completion of work.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all phases of work; i.e. records, meetings, parent rights, etc.

9. Ability to requisition and account for supplies and equipment.

10. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other custodial staff, supervisors, teachers, principals, students, and the general public using the school facilities.

11. Must have bloodborne pathogens training.

12. Must have excellent attendance and punctuality.

Two years of custodial experience in a school required. Some supervisory experience desirable. Sufficient education to ensure the ability to read and write as required in the position. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.

SUPERVISES:

Exercises supervision over subordinate custodians for the purpose of assigning duties, inspecting work completed and training and instructing new custodians on work procedures.

JOB GOAL:

To direct and to supervise the custodial functions that maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use may be made at all times.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as the head custodian for a school or lead worker for a shift having a number of custodians. This classification is distinguished from the lower classification by the greater emphasis on supervisory and routine maintenance responsibilities, the degree of independence which requires incumbents to meet the requirements of principals and teachers, and to ensure the timely completion of schedules. This work is normally performed during the day shift or as the lead worker on a swing or graveyard shift.

1. Confers with school principal or teachers regarding the care and cleaning of school facilities; prepares work schedules; inspects work to ensure that it is done in accordance with instructions; and arranges for substitute custodians as necessary.

2. Performs needed routine plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs as needed; reports major repair or maintenance work requirements to supervisor.

3. Personally performs custodial duties, assists custodians in a lower classification in doing their work properly and in a timely fashion.

4. Instructs, trains, and may evaluate (formally and informally) subordinate custodians.

5. Requisitions custodial supplies and equipment; orders fuel and oil. Maintains basic records as required.

6. Inspects buildings regularly for sanitary and safety hazards, vandalism and fires; makes reports and notifies appropriate authorities.

7. Ensures that buildings are properly secured.

8. Participates in the complete cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings during vacation periods. Exercises direct supervision over custodians of a lower classification during the performance of these duties.

9. Replaces locks; repairs lockers.

10. Provides budget preparation information to the supervisor.

11. An employee in this classification may perform any of the indicated duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve-month year, eight hours per day. Salary to be established by the labor agreement and ratified by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the building principal in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation.
