Mechanic’s Assistant


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Basic knowledge of methods and equipment for maintaining and repairing school buses and other district-owned equipment.

3. Must be able to meet state and District bus driver requirements.

4. Must be able to demonstrate aptitude for assigned responsibilities.

5. Must have at least two years of experience.

REPORTS TO:

Transportation Supervisor and Head Mechanic

SUPERVISES:

None

JOB GOAL:

To help maintain District vehicles in a state of operating excellence so that no problems interrupt the educational program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Change tires on and off rims, do wheel switches, balance wheels and tires. Repair tires and tubes.

2. Service buses, change oil and filters, lube chassis, check and service minor repair jobs at time of lube job, adjust clutch and check tires.

3. Brakes: Clean, repair and reline brake shoes, R&R wheels to reline brakes on vehicles, change drums and wheel cylinders, master cylinders. Adjust all brake systems, repack wheel bearings, clean and inspect.

4. Electrical: Change batteries, replace starters, alternator, belts and bulbs.

5. Gas and arc weld and burn.

6. Operate hot water and steam cleaner.

7. Complete work orders assigned by supervisor.

8. Complete records as directed by supervisor.

9. Substitute as a regular bus driver on an as-needed basis when requested.

10. Provide own hand tools necessary to preform regular daily assignments. Provide the District with a yearly inventory of tools.

11. Assist the Head Mechanic as needed in engine repair, overhauls, transmission overhauls, clutch rebuild, differential work, tune-ups, eight-way light repair or major electrical problems.

12. Perform other related duties as assign by supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve months per year, eight (8) hours per day. Salary to be established by the labor agreement and ratified by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Transportation Supervisor in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation.
