Safety and Communications Specialist

Part I: Position Summary:

This unique and exciting position supports a variety of safety and communication-related activities. The position will work in concert with two fast-paced and demanding departments, assisting two district leaders, and an ever-expanding list of recurring and challenging new projects.

Safety and risk areas include insurance, worker’s compensation, accident, and insurance liability, safety and emergency procedures and equipment, OSHA programs, ODE regulatory programs, and other categories that relate to general work environments.

Communications areas include internal and external communications that discuss and inform the community about our current school bond alongside general interest district and school news.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

Works under the supervision of the District Safety & Risk Management Coordinator and Director of Communications.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities:

● Participates in accident prevention, and the district safety committee processes providing records and input and documenting identified action requirements.

● Assist in ergonomic assessments and maintaining District OSHA programs.

● Update and keep building reunification kits current and supplies inventoried and stocked.

● General recordkeeping and regular monitoring of safety inspections, AED management, fire system annual services, asbestos management plan, OSHA 300 and 300A reporting, purchasing, safety data sheet system updating, Turf G-Max testing, lead in the water program management, radon testing, lead in the paint program, and drones.

● Participate and support the District Emergency, Safety, and Security Team.

● Participates in writing and reviewing written procedures for emergency response and participates in planning and conducting emergency exercises.

● Assist in processing worker compensation claims/modified duty work program.

● Assist in processing property loss claims (vandalism, fire, and theft within the district) including submission to insurance carrier when expected to exceed deductible under our insurance policy.

● Assist in keeping the Healthy & Safe Schools Plan up to date.

● Assist with the annual renewal of District insurance policies.

● Interact with the public, staff, governmental agencies, insurance companies, and adjusters, presenting and exchanging claims information that may be technical or complex.

● Establishes, generates, and manages claim files and risk management records consistent with statutory requirements and District policies.

● Enter and compile accident and claim information to support loss prevention awareness and programs.

● Performs other duties as assigned.

Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:

● Candidates must have a successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening the engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.

● Enjoys writing and creating content including planning, preparing, formatting, publishing district reports, newsletter, emails, social media, advertisements, and other and other communications.

● Develops concepts, writes scripts, secures photos, and supervises the production of multimedia presentations for special events, marketing, or other promotional events.

● Provide leadership for digital communication to the broader community.

● Associates degree or equivalent in business, accounting, or a related function.

● Additional years of risk management experience or applicable workers compensation or other risk management certificates may substitute in lieu of a degree.

● Advanced skill in the use of program support technology, Google GSuite software for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

● Basic knowledge of general risk loss procedures and programs.

● Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.

● Ability to interact with staff and 3rd parties personally, telephonically, and through electronic communications, including in emotional and difficult situations with calm, deliberate and clear organization.

● Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential.

● Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.

As agreed. Salary to be established by the labor agreement and ratified by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Safety and Risk Management Coordinator and Director of Communications in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation.
